What are Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers?

Shell and tube heat exchangers (STHEs) are one of the most common types of heat exchangers used across various industries. They consist of a shell (a large pressure vessel) housing a bundle of tubes. Two different fluids, at different temperatures, flow through the shell and the tubes, with one fluid flowing through the tubes and the other flowing outside the tubes but inside the shell. Heat is transferred from the hotter fluid to the cooler one through the tube walls.

Anatomy of a Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger

An STHE is made up of several key components: the shell, tube bundle, tube sheets, baffles, and end covers. The tubes, usually made of thermally conductive materials like copper, brass, or stainless steel, are attached to a tube sheet that separates the shell-side fluid from the tube-side fluid. Baffles are placed in the shell to direct fluid flow across the tubes, enhancing heat transfer and supporting the tubes to prevent vibration. The entire assembly is sealed by end covers (or heads), with the design of these heads classifying the exchanger into different 'Tema' types.

Optimal Design for Maximum Efficiency

Our STHEs are engineered to maximize heat transfer and withstand rigorous operating conditions. The tubes' arrangement, size, and orientation, as well as the shell's design and the baffle placement, are all optimized for each application's specific requirements. The durable materials used for construction ensure resistance to corrosion and thermal stresses, ensuring long-lasting performance.

Applications of Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers

STHEs are versatile and are used across a broad spectrum of applications:

  • Power Generation: In power plants, STHEs are used for applications such as steam generation, condensation, and cooling of lubricants in turbines.
  • Petrochemical Industry: In oil refineries and natural gas processing plants, STHEs are essential for processes like crude oil preheating, distillation, and reboiling.
  • Marine Applications: In marine vessels, STHEs are used for engine cooling, oil cooling, and steam generation.
  • HVAC Systems: In large commercial buildings, STHEs are used in chillers and boilers to control air temperature and humidity.
  • Food & Beverage Industry: In food processing and breweries, STHEs are used for pasteurization, sterilization, and temperature control during fermentation.

Shell and tube heat exchangers, with their robustness and versatility, are well-suited for a range of heating and cooling applications. They can be tailored to meet a diverse array of requirements and operating conditions.
